Build viewing platforms
A viewing platform is a more sophisticated way of looking at a site than a port-hole. It will require more co-operation with the contractor, but can also offer greater rewards. A platform can be placed on either the outside wall or the inside of the site boundary. It can be open to the elements or be a specially designed space, which could offer a more complete resource. Users of the viewing platform may need to be escorted and consideration must be given to health and safety, as well as access.

Do's Dont's Dont's

Do plan ahead. Early on in the process make sure you have a good idea of the sort of platform you require and make sure that your contractor is aware of your requirements

Do think about the users - they will potentially be returning over and over again as the scheme progresses. A viewing platform can perform several functions and become a mini-resource centre for education visits, meetings, consultations and promotional events

Do consider the position of the platform - it needs to have a good overview of what is going on, be easy to reach and convenient for the contractor to work around. Involve the project team in planning the viewing platform

Do keep the local authority and the HSE (Health & Safety Executive) informed of your plans. They may well want to make use of the facility themselves
Don't be over ambitious

Don't forget that lots of different people will be using the platform, from school children to older people. Make sure that they can easily climb any stairs and have a clear safe path

Don't forget that the placing of the platform may affect traffic, pedestrians and site traffic - think carefully about where you place it

Don't forget that you could have more than one platform, to give an even better view of the works
