Set up a webcam
Webcams can offer excellent views of the site without compromising issues of health and safety. Visitors from all over the world will be able to see your building. Webcams can provide an excellent record of the building process and even allow client organisations to monitor progress remotely. There is no limit to the number of webcams you can use and it is easy to move them to different parts of the site as elements change. Webcams are getting cheaper and the fact that you don't need to worry about supervision makes this a very easy way to take part in the Building Sights programme.

Do's Dont's Dont's

Do take advice on the best sort of webcam to use. Think about its location, exposure to the elements and security

Do move the cameras around the site so that people can chart the progress easily

Do think about how you can use the information for promotional purposes - local media may be interested in using pictures taken from webcams of significant events on site

Do link your webcam to a simple web-site. Make sure that each camera's location is clearly indicated so that people can interpret what is happening on the building site

Do involve the contractor and site manager in the placing and maintenance of the webcams
Don't be afraid of technology - webcams are easy to use

Don't forget to link your webcam to the Building Sights web-site so that all our visitors can see what's going on. You can also link them to other relevant sites - the client's site, the contractor's site, the local authority's site. Most people don't mind adding links

Don't forget to include the costs of installation and maintenance in your tender documentation. The contractor may wish to include the webcams in their overall site security strategy
