The Building Sights Award judging panel met in Sheffield on
October 10th and selected Classrooms of the Future in Telford
as the winner of the 2003 Building Sights Award. New classrooms
at Wrockwardine Wood Church of England Junior School and The
Lord Silkin School were constructed off site and, as part
of an ongoing programme of public involvement, pupils were
taken to the Yorkon factory in York to see them being manufactured.
Turlogh O'Brien, Chairman of the Construction Industry Council
and chair of the Building Sights judging panel said: 'We were
particularly impressed by the quality of the feedback that
the children had produced which clearly demonstrated that
they had understood and been fascinated by the processes involved
in the construction of their new classrooms. Children were
encouraged to champion the schemes in their local communities
and the whole project was carefully integrated into the curriculum.
They were also able to influence aspects of the final design.
We felt it was a good model which could be replicated elsewhere.'
The judges also gave high commendations to The National
Centre for Deafblindness in Peterborough and the LSO St. Luke's-
UBS and LSO Music Education Centre, in London.
